Summary
As Wildwood begins, twelve-year-old Prue and her baby brother were in the park. Prue watched as Mac was lifted into the air by five black crows and carried away. The narrative then reverts back to earlier in the morning as Prue headed into the family kitchen for breakfast. Her parents planned to attend a craft fair, so Prue was assigned to watch Mac for the entire day. She hitched his red wagon to her bicycle and they headed out, doing errands, shopping, eating lunch and stopping at an outdoor cafe. When Prue went into the library to return a long overdue field guide on birds, she left Mac outside in the wagon and was scolded by a woman for not being careful with the baby.
