Summary

In Chapter 31, Fred and Maggie have breakfast together. Maggie says she is thinking about Wildoak, but she is really hoping Rumpus survived the night. Fred says they cannot save Wildoak, but he believes that each person has the ability and responsibility to make whatever small change they can. As Fred gets ready for work, Maggie is shocked to see a newspaper article about the woman who claimed to see a huge cat. Maggie hurries to the forest and finds the hollow in the tree empty. She runs around calling for Rumpus until she encounters a man who asks why she is not in school. (This man is later identified as Brae Thatcher.) When she tries to stutter out her reply, the man lets go of her shoulder; Maggie runs. At home, Maggie holds Spitfire and Hurricane until she calms down. She thinks about...
