Summary

Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 are from Hetty's perspective. In Chapter 13, Reese wakes Hetty after midnight. They discover there is no one on watch. Hetty pauses by the Navy letter that pledges help, but decides it is time to help herself. They can leave campus through the gate, but it will lock behind them, meaning they will have to climb a cliff near the ocean to get back in. Reese knows the island well, having grown up here. They encounter two deer. Reese believes a deer would not pose a threat; but Hetty is cautious. She shoots one of the deer that threatens them. The other deer begins tearing flesh from the wounded deer. Hetty knows that should surprise her, but it does not.
