Summary
Chapter 7 reverts back to Byatt's perspective. The chapter opens with a series of sentence fragments, clearly indicating that Byatt is struggling to make sense of her situation until she is finally awake. A boy enters the room, dressed in a hazardous materials suit, and identifies himself as Teddy. He is a 19-year-old sailor who understands very little of what the CDC doctors are saying about Byatt. Teddy prompts Byatt to speak. It hurts both, and he tells her not to speak again. Alone later, Byatt remembers that her mother decided Byatt should go to Raxter for a fresh start. Teddy returns and Byatt writes answers to his questions. Drugs induce Byatt to sleep more. She remembers being drugged and taken from the school, and feeling terrible that she was abandoning Hetty. Later, a woman who introduces herself as Dr. Paretta helps Hetty change...
