Summary

In the prologue, the author introduces her familial connection to the secrets and mystery of Cape Cod.

In Part 1, Chapter 1, the author narrates her childhood story from the first person.

Family friends Ben and Lily Souther, arrived at Adrienne's family beach house in Cape Cod with pigeons for her mother, Malabar, to cook. Adrienne was 14. Malabar was an excellent cook with a cooking column. Everyone, including Adrienne's stepfather Charles, and brother, Peter, complimented Malabar's meal. Charles was Malabar's second husband, and Ben's childhood friend. The couples spent a lot of time together. Adrienne was embarrassed by the way Ben and her mother flirted. Later, she snuck out to make out with a classmate on the beach. In the middle of the night, Malabar woke Adrienne. She and Ben had kissed. She wanted Adrienne's help orchestrating an affair; she didn't want to hurt...
