Freddy Otash

Freddy is the narrator of the novel. He is a cop during the early 1950s who murders several people, making it clear he is willing to do anything. He considers himself handsome, a good lover, and a charismatic man. He is outgoing and pushy. When he is forced out of the police force, he buys a Private Investigator's license. He sets up cheating spouses, getting photos that ensures a positive outcome for his clients in divorce court. He is manipulative and seems willing to cross any boundary. He says that he will do anything except commit murder or work for Communists, but he does commit several murders and he has a lengthy sexual relationship with the leader of a Communist cell.
