Daisy
Daisy is the main character in the story "Polepole." She travels to Kenya to work on a documentary tracing the lives of sick orphan children. Though the country, its customs, and language are completely unfamiliar to Daisy, she longs for some new experience that will fully transport her from her life and identity. One night at a party, she meets a nameless man through a friend, and lets him take her home. In the dark on the ride back to his place, she finally feels her body and mind detaching, relieved by the sensation. The next morning, while lying in bed with the man, however, Daisy becomes aware once again of who she is. She knows she is using her life in Kenya as an avoidance technique. She wants to believe she is helping, but her conversations with the man make her realize how pitiful she is.
