The Man's House
The story is set at the man's house. However, there is only one scene that occurs inside the home. The story opens with the man standing in his kitchen, pouring himself another drink and observing the arrangement of furniture on his lawn. After this moment of reflective observation, the narrator moves outside the house, onto the lawn, and never returns inside.
The Man's Yard
The man's yard is the primary setting for the short story. At the start of the narrative, the reader learns that the man has taken all of the furniture out of his house and arranged it in the front yard. Not long afterwards, the man leaves home for the market. While he is gone, the boy and the girl see the furniture from the road and decide to stop.
