Summary
Jeanette begins the search for her birth mother and is immediately impeded by the legal system and the fact that hers was a closed adoption. Luckily, Jeanette is in a new relationship with a woman named Susie and "in the place of trust with her" she feels she can continue with the challenging search (180). A friend puts Jeanette in touch with Anthony Douglas, the chief of the UK children and family court advisory service, who tracks down her file. The names in it do not match the names of the birth parents Jeanette found on the papers in the Winterson house. She realizes that the birth certificate she had found there does not belong to her but she has no idea whose it is.
