Summary

The first chapter after the epilogue, Chapter 61, "Peacock," consists only of a drawing of a peacock, which Sola in the next chapter explains is a symbol drawn by sorcerers who feel they have been wronged. This penultimate chapter, "Sola Speaks," and the final chapter are narrated Sola, Aro’s mentor. Sola’s narration suggests that because she drew the peacock, Onyesonwu was able to escape her execution entirely. He posits that this was so that she could enjoy the new world she had created, a "more logical destiny" than martyring herself for the cause (383). In the final chapter, Chapter 1, “Rewritten,” Sola, Aro, and Najeeba watch as Onyesonwu transforms into a Kponyungo and flies to the east to meet Mwita’s spirit under the iroko tree in the jungle.
