Summary
Part 3 begins with a dialogue between Onyesonwu and her interlocutor in the present tense, in an unnamed and unnumbered chapter. She tells her listener to type fast because she will “speak that way” (165). The main story then resumes.
Tensions began to rise as the six travelers, Onyesonwu, Mwita, Binta, Diti, Luyu, and Fanasi, felt increasing stress due to their travel across the desert. One night as Onyesonwu and Mwita used spirit travel to travel the west together, they both saw Onyesonwu’s biological father together. Onyesonwu then learned that her biological father was the same cruel sorcerer Daib who trained Mwita. They discussed this between themselves, as the relationship between a mentor and apprentice is almost the same as that between a parent and child, making the relationship between Onyesonwu and Mwita almost incestuous.
