Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He led the country during the Civil War, and he directed the war effort to prevent the South from seceding from the Union. Although he is often viewed as the most important figure in abolishing slavery in the United States, Anderson pints out that he was not as progressive as is often thought. For example, he generally blamed Black people, not slave owners, as the people responsible for causing divisions in the United States. Lincoln even attempted to persuade all Black people to simply leave the country. Lincoln explicitly expressed that, although he believed in the abolition of slavery, he did not believe in equality between Black people and white people.
