When Ivy is five, she is sent to Massachusetts by herself to meet her parents for the first time she can remember. She spends her childhood roaming the state with her grandmother and stealing from garage sales and department stores. She lives in a bad neighborhood in a house close to Roux Roman, whose mother is the mistress of one of the members of the Boston mafia. When her father gets a job as a computer technician at Grove Preparatory Academy, Ivy enrolls in the prestigious school and starts spending time with the wealthy children of old-money families.
