Summary
In “Chapter Four,” Ivy’s parents decided to send her to China for the rest of the summer. She is upset, but Meifeng came into her room and told her to be grateful to her parents. Meifeng told Ivy the story of her mother, Nan, who had been the most beautiful girl in all of Xing Chang. She had fallen in love with a boy named Anming Wu, who was the star of their high school, when they performed in a play about a farmer falling in love with the moon goddess. They wanted to get married, and everyone thought this was a perfect match except Meifeng. Since it was 1967 and Mao was coming back into power, Meifeng was certain the Red Guards would eventually come for the Wu family and take them to labor camps. She sent Nan away to live with...
