Lorena Alice "Hick" Hickok
Lorena Hickok was the real life companion and supposed lover of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. She is the narrator of White Houses and she chronicles her life story and the events surrounding her love affair with Eleanor. Hick grew up in Bowdle, South Dakota where she was raped by her father, witnessed the agonizing death of her mother, and then was sent out to make her own way as a domestic worker. She briefly lived with a traveling circus before attending college and becoming a journalist. While working for the Associated Press, Hick was sent to interview Eleanor Roosevelt in 1932 just before Franklin Delano Roosevelt's run for president. The two women established an immediate rapport and romance, resulting in Hick's moving into the White House for the duration of Roosevelt's first term in office.
