Summary
Part 3, Chapter 1, begins in the spring of 1944. Sara thinks about how the only constant in life is that time goes on. Sara and Julien are both maturing. Sara wears Jean-Paul's old work clothes. She uses her fancy red shoes from years ago to shoo away mice now. She also acknowledges her romantic feelings for Julien. She thinks he is handsome, and she thinks he probably has feelings for her, too. He blushes, though he tries to hide his feelings.
Julien surprises Sara with a little bird that he whittled for her. Then his parents, Jean-Paul and Vivienne, come into the barn and sing Happy Birthday to Sara. Vivienne had saved copious ration cards to buy chocolate to make a chocolate cake for Sara.
Together, they all listened to Radio London on the radio. They heard a good report and hugged...
