Summary
In Part 2, Chapter 1, Julien told Sara that his parents (the Beaumiers) feared that their neighbors, the Lafleurs, were collaborating with the Nazis. Prior to the German occupation, the Lafleur family had been very friendly with the Beaumier family. Every day, Vivienne dropped off fresh milk. However, after the German occupation, the Lafleurs avoided talking with the Beaumiers. Nevertheless, Vivienne still daily gave them milk. Due to the Beaumiers’ fears that the Lafleurs were Nazi collaborators, Sara could not leave the barn.
Sara appreciated how Vivienne would visit her at the barn every morning. She brought Sara food and water. Vivienne was always cheerful.
