Summary
In Prologue, the narrator notes that if someone would have listened to them, then the events that occurred during the novel would not have happened. There were three eyewitness accounts on April 12 who stated they saw someone jump off a building. In Chapter 1, the narrator returned to three weeks prior, on March 20. The narrator spoke collectively as the voice of several women before focusing on the individual characters. Ardie Valdez spoke to her friend and coworker Grace Stanton about their CEO, Desmond Bankole, who had just died of a heart attack. Grace, a new mother, was pumping her breasts in an isolated room in the office. They worried about their boss, Ames Garrett, potentially becoming the new CEO.
