Chapter 9 Summary
On Saturday, Neeve goes jogging with Jack. Denny is waiting. Big Charley has given him a gun and has told him to get rid of Neeve any way he can.
Ruth hears the news of Ethel's death and wonders if Seamus is responsible. He goes to work in a haze and does everything that Ruth had advised him to do and say. Just after lunch, two officers come into the bar. They ask Seamus to come to the precinct. Meanwhile, Ruth goes to talk to Douglas Brown. She asks him to allow her to exchange the letter that Seamus wrote to Ethel for the alimony check. She tells Douglas that if he will not tell about the alimony check, she will not tell about Douglas' habit of stealing form his aunt. Ruth also picks up the antique dagger.
