Part 1: Chapters 3-5 Summary
With the death of his father, Jack's mother saw an opportunity to reign in her son and keep him from becoming like his father. For this reason, Jack packed up and moved out of his mother's house, taking a room at a local boarding house and a job at the grain elevator. Jack's room became a meeting place for many of the boys in town who would come to drink beer and play poker on Sunday nights. Wanda Jo Evans was often there as well, doing Jack's homework. The boys were unhappy with their arrangement, however, for one reason. The beer was always warm because Jack had to buy it on Saturday and had no way to keep it cold in his room.
