Summary

Part 10 begins with Chunyu close to death after her encounter with Kobayashi. However, a few Chinese soldiers find her, including Erwa, her future husband. She successfully gets him to convince the others to take her with them; Erwa carries her on his back.

Part 11 details the Japanese searching for whoever blew up the warehouse. The Chinese soldiers that have taken Chunyu decide to try and take refuge by going through the “Black Circle,” a sort of “no-man’s-land” where they might be able to blend in (236). The Japanese pursue and eventually shoot the leader of this group of soldiers, but they carry forward. They reach the Black Circle and the Japanese stop pursuing. However, Erwa and Chunyu collapse on the other side of a stream they cross from injury. They are able to recover them.
