Chapter Eighteen Summary
Alma decides to return to Lily, having dropped out of college after struggling with morning sickness and poor grades in her third semester. Her grandmother pays for the flight, and two hours later she is back in Arkansas. She begs Cabot to sign the divorce papers she sent, but Cabot only wants to know why she left him. Alma thinks about the Lazarus woodpecker, deciding if she were the one to spot it, she wouldn't tell anyone. By sheer coincidence, she runs into Lucas who invites her to double date that evening with Cullen as her date, and Mena. Alma agrees. Cabot flies to Little Rock and manages to find his way to Lily after renting a car, hoping to patch things up with Alma. He stays at the Lazarus Motel and in the morning finds his way to Alma's mother's...
