Chapters Fourteen Summary
Alma Ember decides to move in with her grandmother, who is so pleased with the idea that it takes only a phone call to have the ticket and cab fare in Alma's hands. Beverly Ember greets her enthusiastically when she arrives, looking nothing like her age of seventy six. Having decided not to accept the scholarship offered by the Arkansas University, Alma opts instead to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design to learn photography. Her freshman year is challenging, but she still manages to finish with an A average. Cabot Searcy graduates with a degree in philosophy, and announces that he'd like to continue with graduate school where he wants to study ancient theology. His father, Richard, believes he's done nothing but waste money so far, and refuses to continue supporting his studies financially. Alma finally accepts an invitation...
