Summary
In "Where the Wild Ladies Are," ever since Shigeru's mother committed suicide, he has been detached. He signs into work, arriving at his post in "Manufacturing Room No. 6...just in time" (102). After finishing university, he became what is "a 'flitter': someone who bunny-hopped from one fixed-term contract to another" (102). He does not mind the label, nor his current job. All he has to do is inspect sticks of incense for defects as they pass on a conveyor belt.
He thinks about his mother's death. When he saw his mother's lover, and birth father, Okumura, at the funeral, he felt nothing.
