Summary

In Chapter 9, it is only three days until the Fourth of July. Christophe and Joshua discuss Samuel. Christophe expected to strike out, but says he was no able because Joshua looks so much like him. They go to a farm with Paul to choose a goat for the family picnic. Christophe and Joshua buy some fireworks. Christophe wants a kit that includes an explosive that results in a glittering, deep blue rose in the sky. He is skeptical that the explosive will be this pretty but wants to buy it “just to see if it was possible” (141). Christophe needs to get more marijuana from Dunny, knowing some people will want to get high on the holiday. He wants to leave Joshua, but Joshua goes along.
