Summary

In Chapter 8, Ma-mee returns from shopping with Rita. She washes the collard greens Joshua picked. When the three are watching television later, she says she has something to tell them. They correctly assume she is about to say that Samuel is back in town, revealing that they already know. Learning that Samuel had been by the house, Christophe immediately asks if Samuel asked for money. He berates himself for being away, but Ma-mee says he cannot always be there. Joshua feels Samuel would not steal from them, but Christophe says “junkies” do not live by those rules. Joshua reveals that Cille is coming for a visit. Ma-mee decides to cook a good meal that will “make them lazy and easy with food” (124). Ma-mee is having aches and pains, but says nothing to the twins about it.
