Summary

In the Prologue, twin brothers Joshua and Christophe are on a bridge over the muddy Wolf River in southern Mississippi. Their cousin Dunny is below. He says that he cannot join them on the bridge because he is a couple years older and no longer has the same balance. Joshua and Christophe are graduating from high school later in the day. They have partied all night. Christophe tends to rush into things; however, this time, he remains patient and waits for Joshua to be ready. Joshua points out a large white house visible through the trees. Christophe loves those houses but also hates them because “they made him feel poor” (2). He thinks of Ma-mee, his maternal grandmother who raised him. Christophe says the house will be rotted down before they can afford to live like that. Joshua grabs Christophe and pulls him...
