Tellicoe Plains, Tennesee

Tellicoe Plains, Tennesee, is the hometown of Novalee Nation and Willy Jack.. They have left the town behind on their way to Willy Jack's potential railroad employment in California. From all indications, Tellicoe Plains is an impoverished area, and jobs are scarce, hence the trip to California. At the end of the novel, Novalee brings Willy Jack back to Tellicoe Plains.

Wal-Mart

The Wal-Mart where Novalee uses the bathroom is located in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. It is where Willy Jack ditches her and where Novalee secretly lives for a few months. Wal-Mart is also where Americus, her baby, is delivered with Forney's assistance. The tornado that rips through town in 1991 essentially destroys Wal-Mart, and it is so badly damaged that it is torn down rather than rebuilt.
