Summary
Chapter 12. Sequoyah describes a few people he knew of that had crushes on Rosemary, girls (including Farah) and boys (including Jerry, with whom he had a fleeting friendship). Meanwhile, Sequoyah becomes ill with what is diagnosed as a mild ulcer, and has to miss school, go on medication, and change his diet. He spends much of the next several days in bed, mostly sleeping but also having hallucinations (often involving birds) and fantasies about Rosemary.
One night when he is feeling a bit better, Rosemary invites him to her room for a smoke. There, she tells him about her friendship with Farah (which he pretends to know nothing about) and about how the two of them got arrested and sent to juvenile detention for a weekend. She describes the rough and painful treatment she received there, and reveals that she received that treatment...
