Radio

Smith uses a small, portable radio several times to communicate with London; later, he uses the powerful radio in the castle.

Guns

Smith and Schaffer use a variety of captured enemy guns both in the village and while they are in the castle.

Cable Car

The only way up to or down from Schloss Adler is by cable car. Smith and Schaffer get to the castle by riding on the top of an ascending cable car.

Knife

Smith uses his knife in a number of ways throughout the novel. At one point he uses it to keep himself and Schaffer from sliding off the cable car station roof, and later he uses it to cut the telephone lines going out of the castle.
