Chapters 38-45 Summary
In chapter thirty-eight, Miranda spends the first few days of Christmas break alone.
In chapter thirty-nine, Miranda gets a first edition of her favorite book from Richard for Christmas. The author signed it personally. This is the second thing listed in the third note, the proof the author offered to Miranda. This again frightens Miranda.
In chapter forty, Miranda goes out on New Year's Day and calls Annemarie from a payphone. Annemarie's father invites her over and Miranda and Annemarie make amends. However, Miranda did not tell her mother where she was going and she gets in trouble when her mother tracks her down to Annemarie's house. Miranda and her mother go to a movie, forgetting that Richard is supposed to meet them at the apartment.
