Alex's Childhood Home

Alex grows up in a modest home in a middle-class neighborhood near Madison, Wisconsin. The house has two stories and a large yard that Bertha uses as a garden. There is a loose panel in Alex's closet where she hides things. The descriptions of this place are general, and usually only included as part of the events that Alex remembers from her childhood. The house is burned a few days after Marla returns as a dragon.

Alex's Apartment

After Bertha's death, Alex and Beatrice are moved to an apartment near Beatrice's school as a means of separating them from George and his new family. The apartment is very small and dilapidated. Alex has very few visitors inside this apartment during the years she lives here with Beatrice.
