Alex Green

Alex is the main character and narrator for much of the novel. She is the daughter of Bertha and George Green. At four, Alex encounters a dragon for the first time. Though she does not entirely understand the situation, she quickly conforms the the social dictate not to talk about it. That is a habit that stays with her for most of her life. Alex's early life is largely defined by her relationship with her mother and her Aunt Marla. She sees Marla as the stronger of the two women, but is very attached to her mother. Alex is devoted to Beatrice for her entire life, but she struggles for a long time to accept that their relationship will remain the same if Beatrice is a dragon.
