Summary
In Chapter 20, Alex and Beatrice continue to live in the apartment. There is no interaction with George or his family. Alex focuses all her energy on studying and caring for Beatrice. George has made it clear that Alex should do nothing to attract attention to their unusual living situation. He has food delivered weekly and money goes into Alex's account. Bertha had packed away and labeled all of Alex's outgrown clothes, and George sends a new box to Beatrice each year on her birthday. Alex attends Beatrice's school events, making excuses for her father's absence. Alex receives a letter summoning George to the principal's office to deal with a behavioral issue for Beatrice.
