Gert and Zelda’s Apartment

Gert and Zelda live in an apartment in the unspecified town where the novel takes place. They previously lived with an uncle of theirs named Richard, but Richard was physically abusive towards Gert, and he made sexual advances towards Zelda. Gert accepted a loan from Toucan so that Gert could move himself and Zelda to a different apartment. Toucan demands that Gert work for him as a drug dealer to pay off the debt. Toucan gives Gert a bag of drugs to sell, but Hendo breaks in to the apartment and steals them.
