Summary

In “Sweeper:” Chapter 17, Darwin has been working at Fidelis for two months. Even though Darwin is becoming more familiar with the routines of the cemetery, there are still things he saw that did not make sense. For instance, after two days of rain, there was a new grave on which the dirt is still piled high, as if it has just been dug.

One week before All Saints’ Day, Darwin sees the man in dreadlocks again. Darwin follows the man. He stops and looks at the first grave that Darwin helped to dig. Darwin sees that the grave looks fresh. Darwin tries to assure himself that he is just imagining things. Darwin turns and walks back to the office. When he looks back, the man is gone.
