Entrapment
The author uses her main character Two Feathers' diving accident as a catalyst for exploring the pervasive nature of entrapment. Before the accident, Two is feeling "exhilarated and relieved" by her performative successes at the Glendale park and zoo (6). After an injury during "the middle of the previous season," Two is finally back on her feet, and immersed back in her horse diving career (6). Therefore, when a few shows later, Two and her horse tragically fall through a sinkhole and into a neighboring cave, Two is unprepared for the physical and emotional distress she will experience as a result. In the days following the death of her horse and her release from the hospital with a broken leg, Two must learn how to face her loneliness and longing.
