Part 3, The Wilderness: Chapters 4-6 Summary
The change in Sean is remarkable. His beard grows long and unruly, and he is now muscled and tanned. He is quicker and smiles easier. The changes in Duff are not so remarkable. He is as lean as ever, but now there is a restlessness in his manner. Every day he wanders through the bush, checking rocks and panning in streams, but finding nothing. They continue east until Sean finds a pass through the Zoutpansberg and they go into the Limpopo valley. The country is flat and water scarce. Hunting is easy as game crowds around the watering holes. Before they are halfway to the Limpopo, Duff asks Sean if they will return the same way suggesting they bury the wagon load of tusks they have collected and pick them up on the way back...
