Sean and Duff pass a large bar of gold back and forth. Sean wants to buy Candy out, but Duff wants to buy as many claims as possible and a couple of ten stamp mills instead. In two days the leader reef makes a thousand pounds. Duff sets out to buy as many claims as possible, and by day's end he has over a hundred, committing them to a debt of forty thousand pounds. He and Sean go out the next morning again but the Greek does not show up for their meeting. They go to his camp and find him talking to Hradsky, an old employer of his and Francois's current boss.
