Part 2, Witwatersrand: Chapters 10-12 Summary
Christmas is miserable. They eat at Candy's hotel where they still have credit. They have less than four pounds between them, and Duff is taking on a gallows type humor. The whole atmosphere discourages Candy. Francois hears their sad story and sits down with them to describe what he now knows about the main reef and how it runs. Encouraged now, Sean and Duff just need to dig a new trench and keep the mill working for another month or so. Candy overhears the end of the conversation, and quickly offers as much as she can, but they are still short a small amount.
