Part 2, Witwatersrand: Chapters 7-9 Summary
After Duff leaves, Sean works relentlessly. He keeps away from Candy's hotel, and on Sundays he rides to Francois's tent. Duff returns with a convoy that strings itself out over four miles, most of the wagons double-teamed. Sean is nervous, but Duff thinks he will have it all up and running in a month. His estimate is off. Rust in every crevice makes reassembly difficult and when finally done, they head to town to carouse.
On the second day, Candy tells them claim jumpers are on the way. The state has decided the old claims are illegal, and drifters intend to put up their claims.
