Part 1, Natal: Chapters 4-6 Summary

Waite is very careful that night when he drives the buggy home with Garrick. Sean is cold and feeling sick to his stomach after watching Garrick's leg being removed. The servants wait anxiously, asking if there is anything they can do, but Garrick is in this fight on his own. Waite has a flash of anger at Sean's responsibility for this tragic accident, but Ada convinces him quickly that Sean has suffered enough. Instead, they both sit by Garrick's bed and pray for the best. The next few days are a delirious fog to Garrick. He drifts in and out, feverish and whimpering.
