The Choice Between Peace or Violence
One of the most important tenets of the Amish faith is nonviolence. This is something that Jacob adheres to, as well as the other members of his community. They always treat others with kindness and generosity, and will not even hurt another in self defense. When they were living in peaceful times this was not especially hard to follow, because there was no need for violence. When the Blackout occurs and the English world around them collapses, however, they are faced with the choice between relying on violence to protect themselves and their community, or following their faith and refusing to take up arms.
