Jacob
Jacob is the narrator and main protagonist of the story, and his journals make up the bulk of the novel. He is a kind, humble man who is dedicated to both his family and his faith. His relationships with his wife, Hannah, and his children, Sadie and Jacob, are all strong. He is proud of the capable, strong man Jacob is growing into, and cares deeply for Sadie. Sadie's seizures, and the rumors of her soothsaying abilities, trouble him.
Jacob had a difficult time growing up within his father and uncle's strict Amish community in Ohio, and he moved to a more relaxed settlement in Pennsylvania. His uncle's cold leadership style led Jacob to harbor deep anger towards figures of authority in the Amish community, but he overcomes his grudge.
