Summary
Pages 103 - 122 -- The weather continues to shift from unseasonably hot to cold, which makes the planting and harvesting more difficult. Jon Michaelson arrives at Jacob's house to tell him that the previous nights gunshots were from Mr. Johanson, who was drunkenly shooting in his fields after his wife and children left him to stay at a friend's home. Hannah and Jacob decide to donate some of their preserves when the National Guard next comes by for food. Bill Smith stops by Jacob's farm, and they agree to a trade: some of Bill's apples for Jacob's jerky salts and spices.
The military trucks come for food that afternoon, and Jacob rides with them into Lancaster. On the drive over, he notices that no one is working in the English fields, even though there are crops ready to be harvested. He talks with the driver...
