Summary
Pages 76 - 102 -- Jacob is troubled by the difficulties that the knows the English must be facing. Mike left Jacob's home Monday morning, and Jacob is worried about him. The Amish deacons have decided that spare food should be given to the English, and the National Guard arrives at the Schrock Farm to collect the food. Jacob enters into a discussion with Jorge, one of the National Guardsmen, and he tells Jacob that the English are scared.
On Wednesday Jacob talks with Abram Beiler, who had gone into Lancaster with the supplies the day before. Abram describes his conversation with the squad leader, Sergeant Williams, who said that there was no way for the farmers to be compensated for the food that they had given.
