Summary
Pages 29 - 52 -- Jacob and his family attend Sabbath worship at Deacon Sorenson's home. Hannah and Jacob are pleased to see that Sadie was able to enjoy the service, and even sang. Deacon Sorenson's sermon about "secrets and shame" led Jacob to remember the shame his uncle and father had made him feel about his writing. His uncle and father were extreme in their religious beliefs, and had formed their own stricter community, which Jacob eventually left. Sadie comes up to Jacob and tells him that "It is all right to remember," which both worries and reassures him (31).
The weather is hot, and the entire family work on the farm over the next few days. Jacob and his son finish the furniture for the order. Later, the Fishers -- Joseph, Rachel, and their five children -- come to spend the afternoon at Jacob's house...
