Fairness

The authors use the theme of fairness to show that even in a refugee camp, where most people have little and are at the mercy of greater powers, there are hierarchies. As fairness is something that the young adult reader likely grapples with understanding, this theme shows the young adult characters grappling with this on their own, even in the setting of a refugee camp. The authors also use this theme to challenge the reader to consider what they think is fair in terms of what the refugees go through, the process to apply for resettlement, and the outcomes. This encourages the young adult reader to consider refugees with empathy and compassion.
