Stars

Stars are both a symbol and a motif in the memoir, and the image of stars in the night sky book end the memoir on the first and last pages. Stars represent fate, destiny, and the unknown future and identity of a refugee. It also represents the Somalian identity as the Somali flag is a single star. Stars are in the title of the memoir, and the memoir opens in a vast sky of stars, representing the feeling of being a star lost in the universe while knowing one is still part of a solar system. In the beginning, Omar talks about how he looked at the stars for comfort and to talk to them as if they are his parents.
