Summary
Part 2 begins two years later and pages 114 - 115 are a birds eye view of the camp at night, looking over a community of tents separated into blocks with streets, trees, and fences. The caption on page 115 says, “In a refugee camp, everything can change . . . and nothing can change” (115). Omar explains he is still in the camp but they have a goat now called Brownie, and he has new clothes he inherited from a friend of Fatuma’s who’s son died. Omar has passed his exams so he is in middle school now. During the day Hassan takes care of Brownie and Maryam takes care of Hassan. Nimo is also in middle school with them and got the top score for girls but it is hard not to think about Maryam, left behind.
